Quinn’s toddler friend Ozzy just celebrated his first birthday, which was exactly the excuse I was looking for to make these ca-ray-zee cute hippo sugar cookies! I spotted them at Sweet Sugar Belle’s blog and started hunting through my cookie cutters to find something that might work for a hippo head.
When I found the skull cookie cutter (from a Halloween set), I knew we had a winner. Just trim the cheekbones off and perfecto! That last sentence sounds creepy.
I used a little bit of Americolor Black and a pinch of Americolor Violet to make the grayish color. Following Sweet Sugar Belle’s cookies, I used black pearl sprinkles for the eyes instead of icing, which was a big timesaver, but my black pearls bled out a bit. Boo. No idea how to prevent this, so if anyone has tips, please do share!
Wishing a very happy birthday to little Ozzy and his parents, too! Hip Hippo Hurray Ozzy! You’re officially 1!
The skull cookie cutter used for the hippo cookie is from this Wilton set. The letter cutters used to make “Ozzy” are from this collection.
